Racing Beat Mazda Miata Tubular Front Sway Bar 1999-2005

Our testing has shown that each model of 2001 Miata that we have driven has shown a tendency to power “oversteer” at low speeds. The models tested include a base model with a 5-speed transmission, a LS model equipped with the 6-speed transmission and Sport Suspension package, and the LS model equipped with replacement KONI shocks.

Each car exhibited a tendency to oversteer at low speeds (under 40MPH) upon acceleration. Inquires with Mazda have failed to identify any changes to the 2001 Miata chassis that would account for this handling trait.

Our research has led us to develop this larger front sway bar for the 2001-02 Miata. The use of this larger bar (and retaining the stock rear bar) has neutralized most of this oversteer condition at low speeds, and allowed the Miata to exhibit a small amount of understeer at higher speeds. The use of the Racing Beat rear sway bar would negate the benefits this larger bar, and is not recommended This bar is 1.25” OD (3/16” wall) as compared to the 1999-00 bar of 1.125” (3/16” wall). Each bar is supplied with a heavy-duty, cast aluminum bar clamp, replacement urethane bushings, Prothane bushing grease, and detailed installation instructions. Manufactured by Racing Beat, every bar is designed with two endlink mounting holes and is finished with a bright red, durable powder-coat finish..

While the smaller 1.125” tubular bar can be used on the 2001-02 application, we recommend the use of the larger bar.

1999-00 Miata

The larger 1.25” bar will fit on the 1999-00 Miata, but is only recommended for experienced individuals that are seeking to alter the handling characteristics to suit a specific usage.

Due to the strength of the Racing Beat Tubular 1.25” Bar we strongly recommend the use of ALL of the following components with this bar. Failure to use these components may result in the damage to your suspension.

Lower Control Arm (LCA) Attachment Flange Kit

Starting with the 1999 Miata, Mazda made a change to the end link attachment bracket on the lower control arm. The 1990-97 Miata was produced with a U shaped end link LCA attachment bracket. The 1999-01 Miata is produced with a single-sided L shaped end link LCA attachment bracket. Our observations have led us to believe that this L shaped design may not be strong enough to handle the demands of a stronger aftermarket sway bar. We strongly recommend the addition of our Control Arm Reinforcement Flanges. This modification will convert the single-sided L bracket into a double-sided U bracket, and while this modification requires some minor welding, we believe this effort is highly worthwhile. After completion of this modification, the stock end links can no longer be used.
